Baby’s first steps are always a special moment – one of the highlights of watching your baby grow, and when the time is nigh every parent always has the camera at the ready. Well believe it or not, there is now a way to make those first steps even more special with First Baby Shoes.
Being a keen crafter I was super excited to try out First Baby Shoes – a DIY shoes kit that means YOU can make your baby’s first pair of shoes. The shoes are 12cm long (should fit most 9-15 month olds), and designed to be a child’s first pair of walking shoes. They come in a great range of styles and colours. I got sent their latest style, the Karo sandal, but there are two other styles as well and now I want them all!
The beautifully boxed kit comes with everything you need: Precut soft and natural leather uppers, sturdy grippy outer soles and lush pigskin inner soles, needles, thread and of course instructions. It’s a very user friendly kit so you don’t have to be ‘crafty’ to make these shoes, I think even an older child could do this, but the finished product looks very professional and I was quite proud of myself. The website www.firstbabyshoes.com also has some fantastically useful tutorial videos if you’re more of a visual learner.
It took me under an hour and a half to complete the pair of shoes and I must admit I got a little misty-eyed at the end. My baby’s first steps are going to be a pretty special moment, but knowing he’ll be doing that in a pair of shoes that I lovingly hand-made for him really gives me the warm fuzzies. What a sentimental gift I’ll be able to give him and then keep and treasure forever. They might even become a family heirloom, or would look great framed up in a shadow box with a photo of his first steps.
First Baby Shoes would make a perfect baby-shower gift for any expectant mum, or would be a lovely gift to give an older sibling when Mum is expecting a new bub and they could make their little brother or sister’s first shoes. And if someone else doesn’t gift these two you then just darn well buy them for yourself. You’ll have fun making them, will make baby’s first steps even more memorable, and you’ll have a treasured keepsake to hold on to for ever.
