This week I got to review a handmade teddy bear from Teddies to Treasure!
These beautifully unique teddy bears are made from your baby’s outgrown sleep suits, onesies, pyjamas, outfits or blankets that hold a special place in your heart.
Your baby’s clothes are far more than just clothes. There is the outfit that was given to you as a gift by someone who loves you, the clothes that you could not resist buying because they were oh-so-adorable, the dress your mum made for you as a kid or the outfit you chose to bring your baby home from the hospital.
Teddies to Treasure are a Perth company hand-making personalized keepsake bears out of your special clothes. Starting at $100, you simply send in 4 to 6 articles of clothing (depending on the size of the clothing, the more the better!) and 2 to 4 weeks later you receive an original bear sewn from your baby’s clothes. And they are just beautiful! Each one can be personalized with a name and date. Sarah, the owner and talented designer who made my bear, arranged my pieces to optimally showcase the bear and the special items, patterns and emblems.
A good portion of my daughter’s baby clothes were gifts and hand-me-downs, which I ADORE. I think it’s wonderful to dress her in already soft, broken in clothes. I had also been given a few pieces by my mother, that were once mine! At the time, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with these. They seemed too special to throw away, but were too small for Tanner, so what was I meant to do with them?
After much deliberation, I was able to settle on the special pieces to use for the bear. It was not an easy process but I decided on 2 ‘Bunnykins’ pajamas, one pale pink and one white patterned piece. My mother loved the ‘Bunnykins’ brand and would always come over with another pieces she had found! I also choose a white floral jumper that Tanner was given and is wearing in one of my favourite photos of her with my grandmother (who Tanner is named after). Lastly, I included a white floral dress and a white collared, pink polka-dot dress, both mine, circa 1985! As a special request, I asked that Tanner’s name and date of birth be embroidered onto each foot. I packed them up, filled out the simple order form and dropped them in the mail.
The process from start to finish was simple and impressive. I received casual updates from Sarah along the way, fuelling my excitement! To say that I am pleased with how it turned out is a huge understatement. The bear is just divine! You can really tell how much love and planning went into her design. Sarah optimized each part of every item of clothing. “The white ear on the left is actually the corner of a collar taken from the pink polka dot dress”, Sarah says. “I incorporated the ‘Bunnykins’ emblem onto the other ear and unpicked the collar from one of the dresses and added a smaller version to the bear. The bow was then taken from the foot of the pink pyjamas”.
I am so happy that Tanner has this gorgeous bear, which is connected to so many special people and memories, and I look forward to one day talking with her about the different clothes that went into making her special bear.
